Native Hedging - Bare-rooted

The following trees are native to Great Britain and good for wildlife.  If planting as a hedge, plant 4 plants per metre (as a rough guide - suggestions of plants per metre vary from hedge supplier to hedge supplier!).  Bare-rooted stock is sent out from 1 November to 1 March but can be ordered all year round and will despatched at the relevant time.    You can mix and match your hedge but it is recommended that you include at least 50% Hawthorn or 50% Hawthorn and Blackthorn.  You can also plant  a hedge of one species only.  Alternatively you could choose one of our hedge mixes which cover an area of 5 metres.  However, if your garden is small don't feel discouraged - just plant one or two natives or a mini hedge - every little bit will help!

Bare-rooted trees - Each tree is approximately 16 ins to 2 ft (40 - 60 cm) high.  Each order comes with an information leaflet about planting your hedge.  You might find it useful to download for future reference the information sheets regarding each tree, either from the "More info" link under each tree in the shop, or from the Trees section of the main website.  When your trees arrive, unpack immediately and place in a bucket of water - it's important to ensure the roots do not become parched.  Dig your hole or trench with sufficient depth to accommodate the roots comfortably and plant each tree at a 45 degree angle.  If you can't plant your trees for a few weeks you can either dig a temporary trench and "heel" the plants in at an angle, or keep them in water so they don't dry out.  It is better, though, to plant as soon as possible after they arrive.  It is vital to keep the plants well-watered for at least a year until they become well-established.

For further info on native trees and hedging please go to our Trees and Hedging section.

PLEASE NOTE - although our hedging is of native species, the actual trees themselves have come from Europe.  Next autumn our stock will be of British origin.
