Rue (ruta graveolens) 
   

P.  Yellow flowers and attractive blue-green divided foliage.   Ht 3 ft.   A lot of folklore surrounds the plant.  Rats hate it.   Sun.  Homeopathic uses for strained eyes and frontal headaches. 

CAUTION - EXPOSING SKIN TO SUNLIGHT AFTER SAP HAS GOT ON SKIN RESULTS IN PAINFUL BLISTERS.

Sage (salvia officinalis) 
   

P.  Narrow grey leaves and pink flowers.  Attractive plant for any border.  Companion use - deterrent to cabbage white butterflies, carrot fly and slugs.  Medicinal and culinary uses.  Makes a mouth gargle for ulcers.  Ancient Egyptians used the plant to treat plague.  Sage bath good for rheumatism.  More info

P.  Variegated leaves in pink and grey.

Salsify (tragopogon porrifolius) 
   
P.  WF.  Ht 3 ft (90 cm).  Long thin leaves and large mauve-pink flowers.  Its parsnip-shaped roots can be eaten.  Leaves can be used in salads.  Plant near carrots to deter carrot fly. 

Soapwort (saponaria officinalis) 
   

P.  WF.   Sprawling with pretty pinky-white four-petalled flowers.  Root can be used to make a soapy lather.  Food plant of the Marbled Clover moth.  Found in the wild in damp places.  Can also be used medicinally for psoriasis, acne and boils.  Origin of seed - Europe. More info



St John's Wort (hypericum perforatum) 
   

HP.  WF.  Large yellow flowers from June to September.  Ht 1 - 3 ft.  Much folklore attached to the plant. Is commonly used for treating depression and anxiety.    Yellow dye can be obtained from the plant.  Food plant of the following moth caterpillars - Treble Bar and Lesser Treble Bar.  More info

Tansy (tanacetum vulgare) 
   

HP.  WF.  Deeply-cut dark green leaves and flat, yellow flower clusters.  Ht 2 - 3 ft (30 - 60 cm).  Used to be used as a strewing herb and is good at keeping flies away.  Tansy cakes used to be made at Easter time, made from young Tansy leaves and eggs.  More info

White Horehound (marrubium vulgare) 
   

HP.  WF.  CG.  Ht 2 ft (60 cm).  Grey-green, downy leaves, square stems and whorls of white floewrs.  Traditional plant used for the easing of coughs.  Antispetic, anti-spasmodic.  Good for sore throat.  Can repel intestinal worms.  Was used to repel withces also and to break spells.  More info

Woad (isatis tinctoria) 
   

B.  WF.  Tall plant with many small yellow flowers.  renowned as a blue dye plant and used by the ancient Britains.  Can also lower fever and reduce inflammation.  Taken internally for meningitis, mumps, flu, sore throat and encephalitis.  More info



Wormwood (artemesia absinthium) 
   

P.  Greyish, scented, downy leaves and panicles of small yellow flowers.  Ht 3 ft (90 cm).  Used to be used as a strewing herb and fly repellent.  Food plant of caterpillars of the Wormwood Pug moth.  One of the ingredients in the highly addictive drink, absinthe.  Flowers July and August.  More info
