Beech (fagus sylvatica)

Deciduous tree that keeps its dead leaves over winter.  Food plant of many moths.  Makes a good hedge and can be closely clipped.  Supplied 60 - 80 cm.

Coastal Hedge Mix

These plants are tolerant of strong winds and salty air.  They won't grow in sand but are fine by the sea.  Consists of 30% Hawthorn, 20% Blackthorn and 10% each of 5 from Cotoneaster, Eleagnus, Tamarisk, Sea Buckthorn, Rose and Willow.  100 plants - enough to plant 25 metres.

Hornbeam (carpinus betulus)

Saw-edged leaves and hop-like fruits which birds enjoy.

Nature Mix

This is a thornless mix and great for birds and small mammals.  This is NOT a hedge mix but designed instead to be planted in a wood or copse to provide cover and food for wildlife.

Sloe or Blackthorn (prunus spinosa)

Spindle (euonymous europaeus)

Small, greeny flowers that give way to pink fruits which eventually split to reveal orange seeds.  Leaves turn red in autumn.  Food plant of Holly Blue butterfly.  Only 60 - 80 cm height available.  More info.  TOXIC.

 

Wild Privet (ligustrum vulgare)

Semi-evergreen hedge plant with dark green leaves and masses of small, strong-smelling flowers in summer, followed by black berries.  Excellent butterfly plant – Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, and Peacock butterflies may hibernate in it -  and bird plant.  It is the food plant of the Privet Hawk, Swallowtailed, Lilac Beauty, Barred Toothed Striped, Yellow Barred Brindle, Small Bloodvein, Coronet, White Letter, Black Hairstreak  moth.   Other butterflies – Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Gatekeeper and Hedge Brown.  Bees love the flowers too.  It is also fast-growing. 

 

Leaves yield a yellow dye.  Will tolerate exposed, windy conditions, coastal areas and chalky soil.  It is also shade tolerant.  Flowers also attract bees.  Makes a very good single-species wildlife hedge.  TOXIC.
