Lady's Mantle (alchemilla mollis)

Low-growing and spreading perennial.  Green-grey roundleaves with serrated edges and loads of fluffy yellow flowers.

 

 

Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis)

HP.  H.  Excellent bee plant and traditional cottage garden plant.  Has many herbal properties, including soothing insect bites and making a tea for colds and headaches.  Plant by the front door to repel evil spirits.  Has antiviral and antibacterial properties.  Ht 2 - 3 ft.  Produces small, insignificant, white flowers in summer.

Orange Sneezeweed (helenium hoopesii)

Also known as Owls Claws.  Hardy perennial.  Found in the wild in mountain meadows and moist places in western USA.  Ht 1 – 3 ft.  Grey-green lanceolate leaves and yellow-orange flowers 2 – 3 ins wide with drooping rays and same colour centre disc.  Toxic to sheep.  Plant in sun.  More info 

 

 

Persian Cornflower (centaurea dealbata)

HP.  Deep rose-pink coloured flowers froom May to July, rather like cornflowers.  Silver-hued foliage.  Ht 15 - 18 ins.  Sun.  More info 

 

 

 

Phormium

P.  Tall, thick-spiked leaves in a red-green colour.  These plants were given to the nursery so not sure what particular variety they are!  Phormiums look good dotted amongst other border plants.

A few varieties of these traditional cottage garden plants.   Labels have gone missing so it's pot-luck what colour flowers you get - but they are all very pretty!  Thin grey leaves and masses of flowers with serrated edges.  More info

 

 

Purple Coneflower "Ruby Star" (echinacea purpurea)

P.  Bushy plant growing to about 40 inches high.  Lots of large flowers with deep-carmine petals and a brown cone centre.  Flowers from July to September (photo is of the "common" Purple Coneflower).
