SHEPHERD'S NEEDLE (SCANDIX PECTIN-VENERIS)
Annual wildflower and rare arable weed which has declined dramatically since the 1950's. Although still quite common in eastern Britain it is only found in one place in South Glamorgan in Wales. When found it is usually in arable fields, especially on heavy, calcerous soils.
Flowers during summer but as seed is short-lived, germination takes place between October and December. Member of the Carrot family. Ht 60 cm (2 ft). Ferny leaves and clusters of small, white flowers. Each flower forms 2 joined seeds with a long needle-like projection up to 5 cm long that acts as a spring to flick the seed off the plant. This needle has tiny bristles that attach the seed to fur or clothing for dispersal over a wide area.
