Buy wildflowers, herbs, cottage garden plants, seeds and native hedging in our online shop

Hardy perennial. Plant with square, hollow stems and mauve-pink flowers, growing to a height of 4 ft (1.2m). Found in the wild on roadsides and wasteground. Popular herb garden plant due to its attractive foliage. It also has a strong smell. Also known as Throw-wort and Lion's Tail.

In ancient Greece, it was given to pregnant women to calm anxiety - hence its name. The "leonurus" part of its name refers to the plant's resemblance to a lion's tail. "Cardiaca" comes from the Greek for heart because the plant was used to treat heart conditions.

Medieval herbalists credited the plant with powers against wicked spirits. It is a mild sedative and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Plant is most potent right after flowering. Helps panic attacks. Believed to act on the liver and eyes, brightening them. A weak decoction of seeds can be used in conjunctivitis and tired eyes. Plant reduces blood pressure and angina attacks. Has been known, when taken as an infusion, to dissolve blood clots and reduce cholesterol (when taken regularly). An infusion taken after giving birth will help restore the uterus and reduce the risk of post-partum bleeding. Stimulates suppressed or delayed menstruation. Good for PMS and can help hot flushes. Good for heart conditions associated with anxiety. Infusion can be used as a douche for vaginal infection.

Plant in full sun.

CAUTION - DO NOT TAKE IN PREGNANCY OR IF NURSING OR IF ON BLOOD-THINNING DRUGS
