MONKEY FLOWER (MIMMULUS GUTTATUS)

(For sale in the Wildflowers section of the shop)

Hardy perennial. Grows to 18 in (45 cm) high. Member of the Figwort family. Name derives from the large bright yellow flowers resembling monkey faces. Red spots lie in the tube of the flowers; toothed, paired leaves. When the flower is pinched it appears to grin. Therefore, the Latin "mimulus" means little buffoon. Introduced to this country in 1830 and naturalised soon after in rivers and damp areas. Therefore, found in the wild by streams, wet ground or shallow water.

Good plant for pond edges. Spreads well. Flowers summer to autumn.
