Parsley (petroselinum) 
   

B.  Frondy leaves used in cooking.  Rich in vitamins A, B and C, iron and potassium. Subject of much folklore.  Stems yield a green dye.

Perennial Flax (linum perenne) 
   

P.  H.  W.  Masses of tiny thin leaves and tall stems topped with sky-blue flowers with cream throats.  Whole plant has a wispy look.  Ht 1 ft (30 cm).  Many uses, including the seeds (linseed).

Rock Rose (helianthemum mummularium) 
   
P.  WF.   Ht 10 ins (25 cm).  Rockery plant.  One of the Bach rescue remedies for fear, accident or illness.  Yellow flowers from June to September.  Sun.

Rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) 
   

P.  Shrubby herb with thin dark green leaves and blue flowers.  Many culinary uses, as well as medicinal.  makes an effective gargle for mouth ulcers, for example.  Companion use - deterrent to cabbage white butterflies and slugs.  Makes a very attractive hedge - plant 8 ins or so apart.

Sage (salvia officinalis) 
   

P.  Narrow grey leaves and pink flowers.  Attractive plant for any border.  Companion use - deterrent to cabbage white butterflies, carrot fly and slugs.  Medicinal and culinary uses.  Makes a mouth gargle for ulcers.  Ancient Egyptians used the plant to treat plague.  Sage bath good for rheumatism.

Salsify (tragopogon porrifolius) 
   
P.  WF.  Ht 3 ft (90 cm).  Long thin leaves and large mauve-pink flowers.  Its parsnip-shaped roots can be eaten.  Leaves can be used in salads.  Plant near carrots to deter carrot fly. 

Sea Samhpire (critrum maritimum) 
   

P.  WF.  Succulent bright green leaves and white or yellow-green flowers.  Leaves have a salty taste and can be added to salads.  Alleged to help weight; loss and has also been used for kidney problems.  Also aids digestion.

Selfheal (prunella vulgaris) 
   
P.  WF.  Spreads and self-seeds well.  Pretty, thick stems of tiny mauve flowers from May to September.  These flower stems were thought to resemble throats and so the plant was used for treating throat ailments.  The plant should be gathered when the Dog Star is rising.  Some Native American Indian tribes make a tea from the roots.  Leaves can be used in salads and stews.  Anti-bacterial.  Used in homeopathy for colitis.  Leaves can be crushed to make a poultice to heal wounds.  t 1 - 2 ft (30 - 60 cm).

Soapwort (saponaria officinalis) 
   
HP.  WF.  Actually used in making soap lather.  Used to be added to the beer-making process to give a frothy head.  A decoction can be applied externally  to itchy, flaky skin, psoriasis, eczema and boils.

P.  Spearmint leaves.

Strawberry "Alexandria" 
   

Good cropping garden strawberry.

Tansy (tanacetum vulgare) 
   

HP.  WF.  Deeply-cut dark green leaves and flat, yellow flower clusters.  Ht 2 - 3 ft (30 - 60 cm).  Used to be used as a strewing herb and is good at keeping flies away.  Tansy cakes used to be made at Easter time, made from young Tansy leaves and eggs.

Thyme "Porlock" 
   

P.  Grey-green leaves and pinky flowers.  Ht 22 - 30 cm.  Flowers spring through summer.

Vervain (verbena officinalis) 
   

P.  WF.  Large clump-forming herb.   Sacred to druids.  Dark green leaves and many stems of tiny white-lilac flowers.  Ht about 2 ft or so (60 cm+).

White Horehound (marrubium vulgare) 
   

HP.  WF.  CG.  Ht 2 ft (60 cm).  Grey-green, downy leaves, square stems and whorls of white floewrs.  Traditional plant used for the easing of coughs.  Antispetic, anti-spasmodic.  Good for sore throat.  Can repel intestinal worms.  Was used to repel withces also and to break spells.

Woad (isatis tinctoria) 
   

B.  WF.  Tall plant with many small yellow flowers.  renowned as a blue dye plant and used by the ancient Britains.  Can also lower fever and reduce inflammation.  Taken internally for meningitis, mumps, flu, sore throat and encephalitis.
