PEPPERMINT (MENTHA PIPERITA)

Perennial, 1 - 2 ft (30 - 60 cm) high. Spikes of mauve flowers in the autumn and dark green leaves tinged with red. Widely used in flavouring confectionary. Leaves can be chewed to ease toothache.

Peppermint is a good deterrent to cabbage white butterflies and slugs. Doesn't do well if planted near Spearmint.

Can be used to treat heartburn and upset stomachs. Crushed leaves act as an antiseptic to cuts. The leaves and non-flowering shoots are used medicinally for flatulence and gall bladder problems. Essential oil is used in toothpaste, sweets and mouthwashes. Peppermint oil (always diluted in a carrier oil) can be used in aromatherapy for bronchitis, asthma, flu, colds and sinusitis. Can be applied to skin for irritation. Peppermint is not compatible with homeopathic treatments.

In Greek mythology, Persephone, wife of Hades, discovered he was in love with a nymph called Minthe, so she changed her into a plant. Hades couldn't change her back so cast a spell on her to make her smell sweet when the plant was trodden on. Another Greek legend has resulted in mint being associated with hospitality. Two strangers were travelling together through Asia and went from house to house for food. Eventually two householders offered them a meal and rubbed the table with mint leaves to cleanse and freshen it. When they all sat down to eat it was discovered that the travellers were the gods Zeus and Hermes who set out the test mankind. In the Bible, Jesus is angered by the Pharisees placing a tax on mint.

Early herbals recommended drinking Peppermint tea at the time of conception to ensure a male child. Place under pillow to help glimpse the future. Rub leaves on furniture, walls and floorboards to cleanse them of evil and negativity. Peppermint clears the brain. Wrap mint in muslin and place into bathwater to feel refreshed and energised. Chew Peppermint for nausea.

Vigorous spreading plant. Plant in any soil, sun or partial shade.
