Also known as Eglantine Rose. The rubiginosa part of its botanical name means rusty, due to the leaves and stems having a brownish-red tint. Bright pink flowers in late spring to early summer give way to bright red hips. The leaves have a fruity scent when rubbed due to sticky brownish glands on the underside. The whole plant forms a dense mass. Deciduous.
A charm from Scotland reads:
"To cure a broken bone they take a Brier and cleave it almost from one end to the other and put therein a charm . . . this brier they put upon the wall above the sick person's bed, and as the rod joins so will the bone".
