YARROW PLUGS X 10 (achillea millefolium) (472)

YARROW PLUGS X 10 (achillea millefolium)

Hardy perennial, growing to around 3 ft high. Frondy leaves and large panicles of tiny flowers. Also known as Devil's Nettle, Nosebleed and Woundwort. Tolerant of drought conditions. The botanical name "millefolium" comes from the Latin, meaning thousand cuts, referring to the many cuts of its leaves. Found in the wild in meadows, hedgerows and woodland clearings.

There is a lot of folklore surrounding the plant. For example, it was tied to cradles to protect babies from witches; if eaten at a wedding feast the happy couple would remain together in love for at least 7 years; it was believed a tea of Yarrow would prevent baldness if you washed your hait in it.

Yarrow also has medical uses - use as a poultice for wounds. Chew leaves as a remedy for toothache. The flower tops can be made into an infusion to clear oily skin. Consult a qualified herbalist before taking.

Good compost activator and fertiliser. If planted amongst herbs it will strengthen them and make them more disease-resistent. Cut Yarrow flowers last well in water. Plant in any soil, full sun.

Attractive to butterflies and moths, particularly the V Pug, Wormwood Pug, Sussex Emerald and Mullein Wave moths.
