Perennial. Also known as Jerusalem Cross. Grows to about 3 ft (90 cm) high. Produces scarlet, almost cross-shaped flowers during summer. Native to Russia.
Lychnis means lamp, and was named by Theophrastusis in 3 BC. Chalcedonia refers to a place near Constantinople. It was alleged that Louis IX brought this plant from Jerusalem to France when he returned from the Crusades.
Butterfly plant. Plant in sun or partial shade.
