Perennial wildflower with pinnate, silky-haired leaves and yellow pea-like flowers. Ht 1 ft (30 cm) or so. Flowers May to September. Found in the wild on grassland, dunes, rock ledges, cliffs and mostly on chalk. Its name may derive from "anthos" = flower, "ioulos" = down, and "vulnos" = wound. Therefore, soft hairy plant used for treating wounds!
The plant is a rich source of nectar for bees, moths and butterflies, particularly the Small Blue butterfly and the 6-belted Clearwing moth.
Kidney vetch has often been used in treating kidney problems, coughs frostbite, sore throat and blood cleansing.
